Maestral Dropbox Client to Cease Functioning

The Rise and Fall of a Popular Alternative

Maestral, a free and open-source Dropbox client for Mac, is being retired by its maintainer, Sam Schott, after seven years. The client was popular among users on platforms no longer supported by Dropbox. It was praised for its simplicity and small app size.

The decision to retire Maestral comes as no surprise, given the challenges of maintaining a third-party client. Maestral has been lauded for its ability to support users on older platforms and file systems.

What's Happening to Maestral Users Now?

Maestral's popularity stemmed from its ability to fill a gap in Dropbox's support for certain platforms. The client was known for its lightweight design and ease of use. Over time, however, maintaining Maestral became increasingly challenging.

As a result, Schott has decided to bring the project to a close. Users will eventually lose access to the service, although a specific timeline has not been provided.

The retirement of Maestral will likely cause inconvenience to its users, who will need to find alternative solutions. Some may be forced to switch to the official Dropbox client or explore other cloud storage options.
