This made Germany the first country in the European Union to create a legal framework for autonomous vehicle operation.

Current Autonomous Vehicle Testing in Germany

Currently, several companies are active in testing autonomous vehicles in Germany, including Mobileye and Volkswagen. These firms have obtained the necessary permits to test autonomous vehicles under safe conditions. However, Waymo does not yet have permission to test autonomous vehicles in Germany.

Outside Germany, other locations are also seeing technology firms compete for permits to test autonomous vehicles. One of the most promising locations in this regard is the United Kingdom, particularly London. Following Waymo’s announcement, the city appears to be a good location for autonomous technology development. However, Waymo is not alone in seeking permits. Companies like Wayve and Uber already operate robotaxi services in London. Additionally, Baidu, a technology giant, has begun testing autonomous vehicles in the city through a partnership with Lyft and Freenow.
