How to Set a Custom Background in Google Messages

Google Messages has introduced customizable chat backgrounds and themes, allowing users to personalize individual conversations with unique wallpapers and bubble colors. The update, released in early September 2026, is available on Android devices and marks a significant step in enhancing user experience within the app. Users can now tailor each chat to reflect their style or mood directly from the conversation settings.

The feature enables users to select from a range of preset images or upload their own photos as chat backgrounds. Additionally, message bubble colors can be adjusted independently for each conversation, offering a high degree of personalization. To access these options, users open a specific chat, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Wallpaper & themefrom the settings. Changes apply only to the selected chat, leaving other conversations unaffected unless modified individually.

What Happens If You Change Your Mind?

To customize a chat, open the desired conversation in Google Messages and tap the menu icon in the top-right corner. Select Wallpaper & themeto view available options, including gallery images, solid colors, and gradient designs. After choosing a background, users can adjust bubble colors to complement the new look. The preview updates in real time, allowing instant feedback before confirming the selection. Once applied, the changes are visible only to the user on their device.

If a user decides to revert to the default appearance, they can return to the same Wallpaper & thememenu and select Reset to default. This restores the original bubble colors and removes any custom wallpaper. The process is reversible at any time, and no data is lost when switching back. Google confirms that custom themes do not affect message delivery, encryption, or chat history.

Can I use any image from my phone as a chat background? Yes, Google Messages allows users to select any image stored in their device’s gallery as a custom wallpaper for individual chats.
